Starting to sell cakes from home is mostly about being ready on the day an order arrives. This checklist covers what to have in the cupboard so you never turn down an order for want of a small item.
1. Packaging
- Cake boxes in your two or three most common sizes (see our cake box size guide).
- Cake boards a little larger than your cakes, and non-slip mats.
- Boxes and containers for cupcakes, brownies and dessert cups.
- Carry bags and stickers or labels, which make the order look professional.
2. Decorating basics
- A few evergreen toppers and candles (see how to choose the right topper size).
- Food colours in the shades you use most.
- Piping bags and nozzles, and a spatula or scraper for smooth sides.
3. Serving and disposables
- Dessert cups, spoons and napkins for party orders.
- Knives and cake servers if the customer asks for them.
4. The business side
- Check what licence or registration you need to sell food in your area, such as FSSAI, before you take orders.
- Keep a simple note of each order, price and customer, so repeat orders are easy.
- Photograph every cake in good light. Your best photos are your marketing.
Buying in bulk
Small items like cups, spoons and boxes cost less per piece at higher quantities. Work out what you use in a month, then buy that quantity at once. Quantity pricing applies in the cart automatically.
