Which cake box for which cake?
A box that is about 2 inches wider than the cake lets you slide it in without smudging the sides. Add height for tall or topper-heavy cakes.

Rule of thumb only. Cake weight per inch varies with the recipe, so measure your own cake.
How big a cake topper?
For a balanced look, a topper's width is usually half to three-quarters of the cake's diameter. Go to the smaller end for toppers with tall figures or sticks, and the larger end for flat, wide designs.
